This time of year has always been a nice reset button for me as a person, a professional, and as an athlete. And not because of the New Year’s Day thing. Don’t get me wrong, I think it can be an impactful idea for many people that they can sit down and resolve to establish new goals. For me though, I think the reason this time of year is so important as a reset is that the cold, the quiet, the slowing pace of life that occurs with the change of the season allows me to be more contemplative and really explore what it is that I want.
The one thing, as the title suggests above, that truly works for me, and has been the catalyst for thousands of people I have coached over 35+ years, for making real progress on positive change is…adherence.
Defined, adherence is an attachment or commitment to a person, cause, or belief. But to expand even further, or maybe to simplify, is to “do what you say you’re going to do.”
The concept really is a simple one, and yet so many people struggle day to day to exercise this one key that unlocks the rest of life. It is a cheat code, that when applied, grants you access to places and capacities you likely never dreamed possible for yourself, or at least that is, that you never shared that dream aloud with others.
Seeing real change is simple: (notice I didn’t say easy, but simple nonetheless)
- Have the courage to envision and speak into life your REAL DREAM destination
- Set a course in detail yourself or with the help of a guide
- And do what you say you’re going to do.
I talk to my clients about taking a road trip. They get to choose the destination, anywhere they want to go. I’ll sit shotgun, and help navigate and guide them along the path. We will travel the freeway, the winding backroads, or take to the skies, whatever they choose as their desired speed. They choose. It is certain we will have some detours, some stops, and some treacherous challenges to face along the way. Having a guide to help you is so valuable because it can be easy to get lost or get off track in our modern world of distractions; there are too many ways to go.
But…with a guide to encourage you, to remind you what you said, we can simply steer back onto the road, repeating what it is we said we were going to do, and we simply keep showing up.
That is the cheat code. Simple. Not easy.
You are a beautiful creation. You are capable of living a life of thriving. You are just a decision away. And once you decide, “do what you say you're going to do.”
